Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving came and went last week with nary a care in Taiwan. After all, most places have had their Christmas decorations up for 3 weeks already. While not by any means a Christian nation, Christmas does, at least, allow children to be entertained and gives everyone an excuse to go shopping.

Normally, Mrs. Expat and I head out for a nice dinner of Turkey Rice (火雞肉飯) for Thanksgiving dinner. It was simple, cheap, delicious, and kept the Thanksgiving spirit alive. This year, however, we decided to splurge and head out to PJ’s Cafe in Taichung with her sister. I had never been there before, but it’s apparently the longest-running bar in Taichung.

PJ runs an Irish-style cafe/sports bar, has a microbrew German pilsner on tap, and had a Thanksgiving special that was a great deal. He grilled a couple of turkeys on his grill, made some mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, and a couple of salads to go with it. He even had an awesome turkey-vegetable soup. Sadly, he had no pumpkin pie, so my pumpkin pie fix will have to wait (anyone know any bakeries in Taichung that sell pumpkin pie?).

Sadly, we had no camera among us, so we don’t have any pictures. However, NT$195 (about US$6.50) bought a plateful of turkey and sides. NT$100 got you a bowl of turkey-vegetable soup. I hadn’t eaten most of the day, and the meal was rather good, so I had two plates and some soup and washed it down with a tall beer. All in all, not a bad Thanksgiving.
